| Ernst Hoeltzer was born on January 7, 1835 in a small village in Thuringia region, Germany. In 1863, he was employed by the British government and shortly afterwards, assigned to supervise over the construction of the telegraph lines in Iran. Having established a telegraph office in Julfa in Isfahan, Hoeltzer settled there and got down to work. He lived in Julfa until his death in 1911 at the age of seventy-six years, and was buried there at the Armenian cemetery. Ernst Hoeltzer was neither an Oriental scholar nor a politician, or a writer, or a traveler. He was a qualified telegraph engineer with studious care and attention to his work. At the same time, he was a curious and diligent observer, with passionate and painstaking attitude toward photography. He took numerous pictures of Isfahan and its people in the second half of the 19th century and, luckily, this valuable heritage was preserved for posterity.... |
ارنست هولتسر، هفتم ژانويه سال 1835 ميلادی، در روستايی از توابع شهر تورينگن آلمان متولد شد. او سوم ژوييه سال 1911 م/1290 ش. در 76 سالگي، در جلفاي اصفهان درگذشت و در گورستان ارامنه به خاك سپرده شد. به سال 1863م/ 1242 ش، به استخدام دولت انگلستان درآمد و مأموريت يافت بر کابلکشی خطوط تلگراف در ايران نظارت كند. سپس با راهاندازی تلگرافخانه جلفا، در اصفهان اقامت گزيد و مشغول به کار شد.
هولتسر، نه مستشرق بود و نه ايرانشناس؛ نه نويسنده بود و نه مسافر و جهانگرد و سياستمدار؛ بلكه مردي تيزبين و كوشا بود كه کارشناس فن خود بهشمار مي‌رفت. او، فردی جستجوگر و عكاسي هنرمند بود و با تهيه عكسهاي فراواني از شهر و مردم اصفهان در نيمه دوم قرن سيزدهم هجري، يادگاري گرانبها از خود بر جاي گذاشت....

Hoeltzer's family crypt is found on the plot 10/5 of the Armenian cemetery in Julfa. The gravestone also bears the names of the following members of Hoeltzer's family: |
